TEAM NEBRASKA BROOKS - IN THE KITCHEN |
| |
| "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" is not just a cliche for runners. It is critical for fueling, and can have a lasting effect on the way you fuel for the remainder of the day. Hormones that are regulated by eating within the first 60 minutes of waking control cravings and fueling decisions made during the rest of the day. A great way to have the right fuel available is to prepare a batch of oatmeal for about 2-3 days of breakfasts. Steel cut oats provide a slightly lower glycemic response and also seem a bit heartier and substantial. Prepare the oats on the stovetop with 4 cups of water:1cup oats. It takes a bit longer (25-30 minutes) to absorb all the liquid, but the wait is worth it! Add dried fruit and nuts along with agave nectar or your favorite natural sweetener to your preference. Enjoy a 1 cup serving, then refrigerate leftovers for 2-3 days. |
