TEAM NEBRASKA BROOKS - SUPPLEMENTS |

There is a lot of discussion among supplement users regarding Branched Chain Amino Acids. What are they?

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and are needed for muscle repair and growth. There are three amino acids which are essential (you have to get them from the diet) and are branched in their chemical structure. Those are leucine, isoleucine, and valine. BCAA are found in certain foods and recovery beverages, and certain research shows they can help delay fatigue and prevent the use of muscle proteins for energy.

You'll have to look specifically for these amino acids, and then consume 5-20 grams per day during exercise. The suggested protocol is to take them at regular/divided doses DURING exercise. If you are going to try BCAA, as with any other new approach, try them during training, not competition.

Other research shows that carbohydrate during training/competition is just as effective as BCAA. As with most supplements, some athletes may experience a difference, while others may not.
